About thyroid nodules
Thyroid nodules are very common, and most are benign. Ultrasound shows a nodule’s size, shape and features, which helps your doctor decide whether it can simply be watched or needs further testing, such as a biopsy. Your doctor will explain what your results mean for you.
What to expect
- No preparation: eat and take medications as usual. Wear a top that leaves your neck uncovered and avoid necklaces.
- Positioning: you lie on your back with a small pillow under your shoulders so your neck is gently extended.
- Time: the exam usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Results: your study is interpreted by a physician and the report is sent to your referring provider.
